Fire Shop Mechanic.

Summary:
This is a full-time position with the El Paso County Emergency Services District No.1 (EPCESD #1). The fire shop mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of specialized fire apparatus, emergency vehicles, and related equipment. Key duties include performing preventative maintenance, diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, fabricating specialized parts, and maintaining detailed repair records. The role requires extensive knowledge of heavy equipment, the ability to operate various tools and diagnostic equipment, and physical dexterity to handle demanding tasks and work in challenging environments.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Completes work on a wide variety of fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Completes extensive major overhauls and repairs on all types of fire apparatus including engines, drive trains, chassis, fire pumps, and hydraulics.
  • Enters and retrieves maintenance and repair data on a personal computer.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment requiring a standard Texas Driver’s License to test maintenance and repair work.
  • Distinguishes colors to check equipment color codes and electrical wiring on vehicles.
  • Detects backup warning devices when working around moving fire equipment.
  • Operates motor vehicles to diagnose problems and make final tests on apparatus.
  • Operates power-driven machinery such as hoists, jacks, overhead cranes, fabrication tools, and forklifts to service and repair equipment.
  • Uses common hand tools, such as a hammer, saw, screwdriver, or other tools to conduct repairs. Operates a variety of standard office equipment (copier, fax) to copy electrical schematics, engine drive train, and other documents to assist in the repair of vehicles.
  • Performs physical inventory of shop truck parts, tools, and tire room. Moves material such as steel, pipe, or parts, from one place to another using a forklift.
  • Moves objects such as transmissions and truck tires for distances of up to 100 feet.
  • Cleans work area and equipment using cleaning fluids and chemicals. Uses paints for body repair.
  • Works in small, cramped areas while performing pump, electrical, engine, and brake repairs. Works at elevated levels (100 feet) while performing fire apparatus aerial repairs and maintenance.
  • Uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, by the EPCESD #1.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Employee will be required to wear appropriate PPE as supplied by the district.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk; hear; listen; stand; walk; use hands & fingers to feel, handle, or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a fulltime position with a work schedule of Monday through Friday of 8 to 5.  Flexibility in hours is allowed, with approval from supervisor. Hours may include evenings and weekends at the discretion of the Fire Chief, as a benefit to the District.  This position will also require on call periods of works beyond normal working hours.

Travel:
Maintain possession of a valid Driver’s License and have a satisfactory driving record as a condition of employment. Must have access to and use of own transportation. Travel is primarily local during the business work day within an EPCESD #1 work vehicle. Forklift certification will also be required upon hire.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Must have EVT technician with certifications in Design and performance standards of Fire Apparatus, Fire pumps and accessories, Maintenance, inspection and Testing of Fire apparatus.
  • Must have attended a tiller maintenance course and an aerial maintenance course at Pierce.
  • Must have attended an air brakes, ABS, and ESC trouble shooting course at Pierce.
  • Must have attended a CAFS/Husky Maintenance course at Pierce.
  • Must have attended a Chassis Electrical course at Pierce.
  • Must have attended a Command Zone systems course at Pierce.
  • Must have attended a DEF/DPF Emissions course at Pierce.
  • Must have attended a Preventative Maintenance course at Pierce.
  • Must have attended a PUC Maintenance course at Pierce.
  • Must have attended a TAK-4 Maintenance course at Pierce.
  • Clean drivers record with a Class B non-exempt CDL driver’s license or obtain within 6 months.
  • Heavy duty mechanic for at least 2 years is required.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
  • Be in condition to perform his or her duties under physically demanding conditions.
  • Have corrected or uncorrected 20/20 vision in each eye.
  • Individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing.
  • The employee must frequently lift or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance: Be able to pass a background check.
